Chapter Thirty-One

The Golden Leaf was a small tavern that specialized in elven food and drinks. The greatroom had a small bar along the far wall. Round tables filled the rest of the room. A doorway to my right opened into a hallway. Most of the clientele were elves, save for a few humans and orcs.

Once our group entered, a serving woman quickly approached us. She glanced at Tara and Harvald before addressing me.

“Good evening, sir. Your private dining room is ready for you,” she said softly.

“Private dining room?” I asked, speaking as softly as she had done.

“Yes, sir. Follow me,” she gave me a knowing nod before walking towards the doorway that led to the hallway.

We followed her. The serving woman opened the second door on the right. Inside was a small room with a large round table with ten chairs around it.

“Please be seated, I will return with drinks,” the woman said and left, closing the door behind her.

“The person we are supposed to meet seems to be very secretive,” Nikita said.

“Even Takashi the smith gave us very little information,” I said.

The woman returned carrying a tray with five mugs of ale. She placed one in front of each of us and turned to leave again.

“I believe someone else will be joining us,” I said.

“Yes. They will be here soon,” she answered and left.

“Might as well taste the ale while we wait,” Harvald said as he raised his mug to his lips.

“Not bad. A little sweet perhaps, but not bad,” the dwarf said once he had tasted the ale.

We sipped our drinks as we waited. After fifteen or twenty minutes, the door opened again. A hooded figure entered and then closed the door behind them.

The figure stood by the door for a moment and looked towards us. Then they walked over to the table and sat down in one of the empty seats. The hood hid their features, but I could see their hands.

They were a man’s hands. He was wearing a jeweled ring on each index finger. The fingernails were neatly trimmed. They were the hands of a man of leisure, not those of a warrior or a laborer.

“Are you the leader?” the hooded figure asked as he turned towards me.

“Yes,” I said.

“Takashi tells me you are traveling adventurers in need of work,” the hooded figure said.

“It depends on the work,” I replied.

“I can pay you handsomely,” the figure said as he leaned back in his chair.

“What do you need us to do?” I asked.

“I need you to rescue someone,” he answered.

We had discussed some possibilities as to what mission would be offered. Rescuing someone had not crossed our minds.

“Rescue? From where?” I asked.

“I need you to swear to me upon the gods’ wrath that you will not disclose what I am about to tell you to anyone,” he said.

I looked towards Kazumi. She nodded.

“I swear upon the gods’ wrath that we will not disclose your secrets,” I said, hoping that this was what I needed to say.

The hooded man nodded.
